... Thoughts on Programming and Photography

Welcome to Richbeales.net

This is my little corner of the web. I mainly use this site to play around with new code and ideas, taking advantage of my virtualised Linux hosting server (courtesy of 1 and 1) to learn Python. I'm currently writing the Content Management System that this site uses in the background - written from scratch in Python using the CherryPy framework and Cheetah templating engine, running on top of a MySql database. I'm hoping I can get the code to a point where I can release it to the world, but it's not quite there yet.

I'm a bit of an open source evangelist, preferring software that is free to use and free to modify over closed, expensive alternatives. I don't run Microsoft Windows at home, instead opting for Ubuntu on both my desktop and netbook.
Given the choice, I use Python as my programming language, and Vim as my editor. I enjoy fiddling with things, learning as I go. Things like Apache and Postfix.
I'm planning to do a lot more blogging over the coming months, explaining my choices and why I think they're as good as, or better than the alternatives. Watch out for new blog posts, and feel free to take a look around the site.

See my wife's new website for her new driving school in Ramsgate.
